How to Choose a Roofing Contractor in Texas (and Spot Storm Chasers)

After a big hail storm, roofing trucks show up in every neighborhood. Some are great local companies. Others are storm chasers who will be gone before your warranty matters. Here's how to choose a roofing contractor you can trust in Texas and Oklahoma.

Know the Licensing Rules

Texas does not require a state roofing license. That makes vetting even more important. Some roofers hold a voluntary license from the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT), and many cities require a permit for a re-roof.

Oklahoma requires roofing contractors to register with the Construction Industries Board (CIB). Ask for the registration number and look it up.

7 Red Flags of a Dishonest Roofing Contractor

  • A bid far below everyone else: often means cut corners or surprise charges later.

  • No written contract: materials, scope, timeline and payment schedule should all be in writing.

  • Pressure to sign today: scare tactics about storm damage or limited-time pricing.

  • No proof of insurance: ask for liability and workers' comp certificates.

  • No local office: only a cell number, a P.O. box or out-of-state plates.

  • Full payment up front: a deposit is normal; the full amount before work starts is not.

  • Offers to waive your deductible: in Texas, a contractor can't legally waive or rebate your insurance deductible.

How to Vet a Roofer Before You Sign

  1. Check reviews: look at Google and BBB ratings and read the recent ones, not just the star count.

  2. Confirm insurance: ask for certificates sent directly from the insurance agent.

  3. Verify the address: a real local office means they'll be around for warranty work.

  4. Get an itemized estimate: labor, materials, decking, permits and disposal should be spelled out.

  5. Ask about warranties: get both the manufacturer and workmanship warranty in writing.

  6. Ask how they inspect: drone photos let you see the damage yourself instead of taking someone's word for it.

What to Do If Something Feels Wrong

  • Pause the work until your questions are answered.

  • Document everything: contracts, receipts and photos.

  • Get a second opinion from another reputable roofer.

  • Report problems to the Better Business Bureau or your state attorney general's consumer protection office.
