Class 4 Shingles in Texas: Cost, Insurance Discounts and Are They Worth It?

If you live in North Texas or Oklahoma, hail isn't a question of if, it's when. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are built to take more of that punishment and can lower your insurance premium. Here's what they are, what they cost and whether they're worth it.

What Are Class 4 Shingles?

“Class 4” is the highest impact rating under the UL 2218 test. In that test, a 2-inch steel ball is dropped from 20 feet onto the same spot twice. If the shingle doesn't crack or split, it earns a Class 4 rating. Most standard architectural shingles don't carry an impact rating at all.

Class 4 shingles typically use a rubber-modified (SBS) asphalt or a reinforced backing that flexes on impact instead of fracturing.

Class 4 Shingles and Your Texas Insurance Discount

Many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for roofs rated under UL 2218, with Class 4 earning the largest credit. Each insurance company sets its own discount, so call your agent for your number before you choose a shingle.

To qualify, the shingles must carry the manufacturer's impact-class label, and your roofer typically completes the Texas Department of Insurance Form PC068 (Impact-Resistant Roofing Installation Form) after installation. We handle that paperwork for you.

How Much Do Class 4 Shingles Cost?

Class 4 shingles cost more than standard architectural shingles, both in material and sometimes labor. On a typical Texas home, the upgrade often adds a few thousand dollars to a replacement. For many homeowners, the insurance discount and fewer hail claims make up the difference over the life of the roof. See our Texas roof replacement cost guide for full pricing.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Best-in-class hail resistance for an asphalt shingle

  • Possible insurance premium discount

  • Fewer roof claims after moderate storms

  • Looks just like a standard architectural shingle

Cons:

  • Higher up-front cost

  • “Impact-resistant” isn't hail-proof; very large hail can still cause damage

  • Discounts vary by insurer and policy

Are Class 4 Shingles Worth It in Texas?

If you're already replacing your roof, especially after a hail claim, Class 4 is usually worth pricing out. Get your insurance discount in writing from your agent, compare it to the upgrade cost, and decide with real numbers.
